HARD COAL and COAL CARS
Hauling Anthracite on the New York Ontario & Western
Railway
by Martin Robert Karig
III
In Hard Coal and Coal Cars Bob Karig tells the
story of the coal hauling enterprise of the legendary New York Ontario and
Western Railway - the O & W. The story begins with an overview of the
development of the anthracite mining industry in Pennsylvania. Increase
in the demand for coal led to the development of nine, class one railroads
that depended on coal hauling for a significant portion of their revenue.
Karig then describes how and why the O&W initially entered the anthracite
market and how its business evolved and developed. This background sets
the stage for the author's comprehensive discussion of the history of coal
cars. The detailed presentation includes not only the history of the cars
themselves but also the related technology and appliances. This intensively
researched and well-documented book contains a complete illustrated history
of O&W coal cars and concludes with a comprehensive coal car identification
section. This book is not just for those interested in the New York, Ontario
& Western Railway, but for anyone interested in the history of coal
cars the important roll the railroads played in the history of Pennsylvania's
rich anthracite coal fields.

Rails along the Oriskany by John Taibi
Rails along the Oriskany is an in-depth historical account
of the New York Ontario and Western Railway's operations to Utica and Rome,
new York, through the valley of the Oriskiny Creek. The association of the
creek and a railroad goes back to post-civil war years when railroad fever
was raging across central New York State. The Utica, Clinton and Binghamton
and Rome and Clinton Railroads were built to satisfy the demands for continued
prosperity; these were the lines the N.Y.O.&W. began to operate under
lease in 1886. Rails Along The Oriskiny is the story of a
railroad and the communities it served. Contains 212 photographs within
its 296 pages and is available in soft cover and hard cover versions. Soft
cover $25.00, hard cover $39.00. The hard cover is limited to 500 copies.
Images of Rail Series The Ontario & Western Northern Division by John Taibi
This is John's fifth book on the O&W.
The New York and Oswego Midland Railroad-reorganized
as the New York Ontario & Western Railway-was born out of necessity

State. The railroad meandered down from Oswego, traversed the north shore
of Oneida Lake, and then took a southerly route through Oneida and Norwich
before turning east for a mountainous crossing to gain the village of Sidney.
This book visits the O&W's Northern Division with many wonderful photos
and detailed captions. Soft cover 61/2" X 91/4", 128 pages. $19.99

"A Hill, a Branch, and
the Pecksport Loop"
by John Taibi
Ontario and Western Railway Historical Society menber John Taibi has done
it again. John produced this book for the historical society. This is another
great Observer Publication for anyone interested in the O&W. The Pecksport
Loop is on the O&W's Northern Division between Randallsville and White
Corners. Before the "Loop" was constructed the O&W's trains
had to negotiate the steep grades through the town of Eaton over Eaton Hill
Summit. With the completion of the Pecksport loop in September of 1896 trains
would still have to make it over a summit but it was 170 feet less in elevation.
Now heavier trains went through the town of Hamilton, Pecksport and Fargo
bypassing the Hill. There are 98 pages of awsome photos and interesting
stories of this area. There are many great photographs, Track and structure
plans, etc. Price $20.00
