What about the
gray body color?
Some modelers questioned the color used on the FT's. For all intensive purposes the color used was very close.....that is, for the as delivered paint scheme. Very few people remember this color, most remember the lighter washed out gray which we all see in the color publications. Stewart Hobbies matched the color used to produce these F-3's by comparing samples to the pictures recently published in Paul Lubliners "The O&W in Color".

As with all of Stewart Hobbies locomotives they come completely painted excluding locomotive numbers and some of the finer details. This allows the modeler to customize each locomotive to their specific "Favorite Locomotive". As with the FT's the OWCS is making available a decal set for the F-3's providing all of the appropriate numbers required, builders and trust plates and silver kick plates. This decal set is included exclusively by the OWCS with each A Unit and A & B set sold by us. In addition the O&W added front and rear foot boards to the 501, 502 and 503. These engines were used in switching operations. The foot boards provided a place for the crew to ride the locomotive between moves. With each single A Unit comes front and rear foot boards and diagrams for mounting them and the grab irons. This is another OWCS exclusive item. Single A units are powered, A-B sets are powered A's non powered B's. Additional power units are available to power the B units as listed below. Photo's from EMD Archives

The N.Y.O. & W. had three single F-3 Phase II A units numbered 501- 502-503 & one A-B-B-A set numbered 821 and 822 A & B. These engines were delivered in March of 1948 and remained in service until March 29, 1957. Photo taken at Cadosia, NY in the late 50's. David Conner Photo

In an effort to help bring the O. & W. back into the black by reducing the high maintainance costs in the motive power department the railroads management convinced the bankruptcy courts that to survive the railroad must dieselize. This effort began in December of 1941 with the delivery of three GE 44 ton diesel switchers. These engines were numbered 101- 102 and 103. In january of 1942 No. 104 was delivered and in August of the same year No. 105 was received. Originally they sported a maroon, black and silver paint scheme. Beginning in 1946 they would receive the gray, yellow and orange scheme to match the FT's. The only known color picture of these engines in the original maroon scheme can be seen in Paul Lubliner's O. & W. color book on page 20. All of these engines sold off to shortline operators between 1950 and 52. Marv Cohen photograph. During the late 1980's W&R Enterprises imported an HO and O Scale model of the GE 44 Tonner Phase 1C which is a well running and desireable model. See photos of them in the
"AV Paint" page.
