50' AAR PLUGGED DOOR BOXCARS
STANDARD STYLE
Plug door boxcars gained popularity starting in the 1950's. During the following decade over 3,000 cars were built to similar designs for a number of different owners. These cars were used to haul a wide variety of products, many of which had formally been hauled in reefers. These cars were classified as AAR classes "RB" or "RBL" meaning "bunkerless refrigerator car" (no ice compartments) "constructed with insulation in side, ends, floor and roof." In the early 1950's General American and Evans Products teamed up to produce a state-of-the-art plug door boxcars cars to a unique design. These cars featured two large horizontal panels on each side of the door, which were joined with a horizontal rivet strip, giving them a very unusual appearance. Between 1954 and 1959 a fleet of 1,025 plug door versions were built. General American leased and then later sold these cars to many railroads nationwide.
