Prototype History

Between 1891 and 1895 the Lafayette Car Works and the Peninsula Car Company built over 2600 30 ton coal cars for the New York, Ontario & Western Railway. These cars were needed to handle the increased anthracite traffic coming out of the mines near Scranton, Pennsylvania. These cars were of all wood construction and were built to a design similar to that employed by many roads near the turn of the century. A cross between a gondola and a hopper, these cars featured drop floors but had no internal slope sheets, meaning that the cars were not self-clearing and manual labor had to be used to
empty the cars fully. Within a few years the classic two-bay hopper designs would gain widespread use and make all previous versions obsolete. Despite the newer designs these cars remained in service for many years. The safety act of 1893 required the replacement of the “Link and Pin” couplings with the automatic coupling. An amendment implemented in 1896 required the addition of air brakes replacing the manual hand brake systems. Between 1908 and 1909 a number of these cars received steel frames which extended their service. The wooden cars served in the very demanding coal service on the O&W’s roller-coaster Scranton division until the end of W.W.I. By that time wrecks and
hard use had taken their toll on the roster and the last cars were retired from revenue service. However, many carried on in company service moving coal on the mine branches until they were moved to Middletown for dismantling, circa 1922.
